This is a big smile maker!

A fantastic (in both the literal and figurative sense of the word) design by Nim Teasdale, here is what she writes about The Dragon's Tale:

The Dragon’s Tale can be a simple scarf, or a fierce protector of the neck.

It can be worked as a long, narrow crescent, or slightly deeper, or even adapted to a rectangle with a lovely wavy border along the bottom.

Or for the true dragon fans, add the head and tail sections to create your own pet dragon that will snuggle warmly round your neck and peer imperiously at strangers, or flick its tail in warning if someone gets too close..

Isn't that marvelous? :-) And you just know that I love dragons!

Nim also notes that this design uses minimal lacework - each row has a single increase and decrease in each row of the border, creating the rippling, sinuous edge. Plus it uses a very simple integrated I cord edge, formed by slipping the first three sts.

The Dragon’s Head is shaped mostly with cables, and is included in the pattern in its own PDF. You will have a choice to create a head-to-tail dragon, or simply a dragon scaled scarf.

The pattern is both written and charted.

It is best if you get it from Nim's Ravelry page here.

The Yarn

Designed by Nim to be adaptable to any yardage of heavy fingering, DK
or worsted weight yarn, this is one of those amazing patterns where just about anything would work. Take a look at the Project Pages for this -- some beautiful scarves are there, knit in ranges from fingering to aran and looking very good indeed.

So I thought this was a wonderful opportunity to present some striking colors!  Our kits do not include the same yarn as what Nim used in her original piece.  You can see what we have in the inset photos on the top picture and again below it, as well as the last two photos on this page.  The other photos are there to show you the design.  Let your imagination flow!

Ella Rae Lace Merino DK is the yarn offer via this web page.  It is a beautiful 100% superwash merino which takes dyes very richly.  Each skein has approximately 302 yds / 100 gram skein.

Nim recommends using anywhere from 200 - 800 yards (183 - 732 m).  Her original piece was knit using 495 yards of a DK yarn and ended up as about 66" x 17".  However, again look at those Project Pages -- there are quite a range of sizes and yardages used.  This is truly your choice.

You will notice that Nim's original dragons were knit in a variegated yarn.  These will give you a similar look.  In fact, I believe the browner of Nim's two pieces shown here was knit using only 200m (about 215 yards) of a DK weight yarn.

Each kit will include one skein in the colorway of your choice.   If you would like to increase the size, either width-wise or length-wise, the pattern will allow it -- you will however, need two sets of yarn.

This will be a wonderfully quick knit in a sport weight or DK weight yarn, a true change of pace.

The Colorways

1. After The Storm is a marvelously dragon-y colorway with ecru combining with speckles and dashes of teals and golds and eggplant and chocolate.  (Sorry, sold out)

2. Tahiti Bay is a cool colorway, of blues and grays and turquoise.  I am thinking it is a water  dragon. :-)

And as a special extra, every kit will include some fire polish crystals, at least two though most likely more. You might choose to use them as eyes for His Greatness (the dragon, of course) or perhaps simply as embellishments elsewhere (his tail perhaps?) or not at all. Your choice.

The Pattern

Note also that the kit will not automatically include the pattern.

We know most knitters prefer to have their patterns saved to their Ravelry library. To do this one must get it directly as a PDF file of the pattern from Nim via her Ravelry web page. This is what we suggest, as that way you will automatically get any updates and your pattern will be saved in your Rav library.

However,  if you would like a printed copy, or would prefer that I email it to you, please contact me and I will set you up with those options.

This is a tremendously fun knit.
