A glorious shawlette, a true song to Summer in all its leafy glory!

This is one of a series of Tree of Life Fichus by Caroline Steinford.  A beautiful set of small shawls that are designed each around a season, with fascinating stitchwork and enough change one to the next to keep them fascinating to knot.

Beautiful.  All of them.  Here we have put together kits for the Summer version.

Note that you must get the pattern directly from the designer on her her Ravelry page.  This kit only includes the yarn and possibly beads.

The Design

Here is what Caroline writes:

The Tree of Life in Summer Fichu is a crescent-shaped shawl with elongated “wings” which help it sit securely on your shoulders. The shawl is cast on at the neck edge and worked downwards, culminating in a 5½”-wide sideways lace border which is joined progressively to the live stitches along the bottom edge of the shawl. No sewing is required. Increases are worked along the front and sides of the shawl to avoid a pronounced triangle point at the center back.

The design shows the Tree in Summer surrounded by flowers and edged with leaves. This fichu is the first in a series of fichus depicting the Tree of Life through the seasons.

The Yarn and Colorways

The photos of the original shawl which you see on this page are courtesy of Caroline Steinford and used with permission.

Here is what we have for you:

***Kit A:  This first kit offering mirrors closely what Caroline used to knit her original shawl (shown on these pages).

She knit in Mini Mochi, from Crystal Palace.  This yarn is a single-ply 80% merino/ 20% nylon blend with 195 yards (180m) / 50g.  Each skein gives that slooooow color change.

Caroline used two balls to make her original shawl and that is what each kit will include if you choose this yarn/colorway for your kit.  If you would like a third one for "safety", contact me and if we have stock, I will set you up with it.

The colorway we have chosen is a bit different than the one Caroline used. She knit with Fern Rainbow, a lovely blend of browns and greens.

We chose another as perfect for the abundance of summer.   Leaves & Sprouts is a beautiful blend of varying greens, from spring green, through deeper tones into true green and back again through an olive and back to spring green again.  (Sorry, sold out)

***Kit B:  The second offering we have uses yarn from Univesal Yarns, their Poems Sock.  Made up of  machine washable yarn of 75% superwash wool/ 25% nylon and has 459 yards (420m) per 100 gram ball.  Poems Sock again has very long color runs and will give a similar look to what the original shows but in this case, the colors are a bit more varied, indeed more dramatic.

One skein will be included in the kit if you choose this one.

We chose Sky & Earth, again a colorway that sings of summer.  This has a range that includes varying browns including chocolates and golds, plus a striking range of blues from sky blue and turquoise into deeper cerulean and midnight.

Caroline's shawl as she wrote it includes no beads.  However, if you would like to add a few, there are lots of places where a bit of bling would look awesome.

It would be up to you. There is an option under the first photo on this page which gives you the choice of yarn alone for your kit or yarn + beads.

If you choose to add beads to your kit, we will include a 20 gram container of size 6/0s -- that will give you about 240 beads + or -.

Generally speaking, I like to add beads that pick up one or more of the colors in the yarn.  If you have a preference, tell me.  Otherwise I will choose for you.

The Pattern

The 5 page PDF contains charts for the border lace, the entire body of the shawl and color photographs.
