Triangulate was the first of a great new series of scarf designs by Jennifer Dassau of the Knitting Vortex -- Jennifer is the designer of the most interesting Venomous Tentacular. We had actually presented her second pattern first (a bit backwards, I know) when we put up her Rondelay. So we want to remedy that now.

What Jennifer did was she decided to play with some non-traditional shapings in shawl designs. Here is how she describes it:

The first in a series of shawls exploring nontraditional shaping with short rows,Triangulate is a one-skein garter shawl composed of triangles with a chevron border. It is designed to show off the colors of a variegated skein, using simple stitches and beautiful yarn. The central triangle begins with a provisional CO at the center, and is knit outwards in two halves using short rows. The wide edging is knit continuously from the live stitches with no picking up necessary, and may be made narrower or wider to accommodate varying yardages. The unusual construction results in a deceptively simple shape that is easy yet interesting to knit, and versatile to wear.

The pattern makes one size, approximately 58” wingspan and 19” depth from top edge to bottom point. The original one that you see in these photos was knit using Malabrigo Yarn Sock (100% superwash merino, 440 yards); shown in Archangel. Only one skein was needed.

Which opens up a wonderful range of options.

And as a by-the-way, I just put up some stunning merino/silk blend fingering weight yarns called Tokyo-- I'd highly recommend them for this simple shawl. The colors will really shine.

We really want you to be able to play joyfully with this most unusual design.
