The Design
Here is what Ginny writes about this piece:
I am really happy with my new knitting design. It is a really practical, cosy hat, but also pretty and quite unique. Working on the tulip motif took me some time, and I have ideas for some other patterns where I will use it...
...I would call it medium difficulty, as each flower is knitted with two separate lengths of wool. It is explained in the pattern how to do this, but the main aim was so the wool did not need to be carried on the reverse side between the flowers, which would have made the hat too tight. An added advantage of knitting this way means that it takes less wool.
Yarn and Colorways
Ginny also writes, "The Tulip Hat is knitted in doubleknit wool, and takes a bit less that 100g of the main shade. You also need 12g of leaf colour and 12g of flowerhead colour. "
I was able to find some high quality wool that would work beautifully for this design and not break the bank (so to speak). The yarn is from Laines du Nord, called Vasto, and is 100% merino with 137 yards/ 50 gram ball.
Here is a bit about the yarn: This 100% fine wool comes from lovingly raised ‘Gentile di Puglia’ sheep, a breed derived from cross-breeding local ewes with Merino rams first brought from Spain in the fifteenth century. After the Unification of Italy in the nineteenth century, they were cross-bred with French Rambouillet and German Merinolandschaf sheep. The result was high-quality fine wool with a fiber diameter of 18–22 microns. It has a slightly elastic and dry touch that creates zero pilling, making it ideal for all stitch work.
We brought in three colors:
1. Cream : two balls per kit = 100g
2. Red: one ball per kit (50g)
3. Bottle (a deep green): one ball per kit (50g)
