I couldn't resist this photo of tulips! :-)

This was Kristina's original piece, the smallest size.

I love how this photo shows the stitch detail and design, plus how the beads add to the whole.

Absolutely gorgeous!

A shawlette, glowing with beads -- wear springtime around your neck this year!

The Design

Here is how Kristina describes Tulippa:

Tulippa is a blue-haired girl who lives in a tulip in one of Tove Jansson’s books about Moomins. She saves Moomins from a huge snake by igniting a bright light at the right moment. Children’s stories nurture hope that everything in the world turns right at the end, don’t they?

The shawl is worked sideways starting at one tip, where tulip stems start growing. When tulips open a few beads can be added to make the tulips glow. The shawl is knit in one piece — the borders are worked as you go.

She also mentions on her own Project page:

This was a very fast project to make, from idea to bind of it took me three days. I love this shawl shape, it gives a lot of space for flowers to grow and bloom, it felt like creating a painting. Low number of the stitches even at the final rows makes it a very rewarding knit.

I think this one is really special.

The Yarn

Our kits are put together with a different yarn than the original one Kristina used.  You can see photos of our yarn in the inset photos on the top picture and again below that.  The other pictures are there to show you the original piece so you can see the design.

Interestingly, the one shown in these photos is the smallest version, the shawlette made with just 426 yards of yarn.

We offer for this kit two colorways of Ella Rae Lace Merino, a mis-named fingering weight yarn of 100% merino wool.  Each skein is 100 grams and has about 459 yards/ 420m of yarn.

Which means that one skein would be plenty for this smallest size.

If you would rather make one of the larger sizes, just contact us.  If we have the supplies in stock, we'll set it up with you.

The Colorways

We have two of the solid colors to offer here, both rich and vibrant songs of Spring.

1. Purple is just that -- a vivid royal purple; the color of fragrant lilacs, violets, and yes even some tulips.

2. Dark Magenta is a rich dark rosy fuchsia -- this one almost glows.

The Beads

All that are needed for the small size is 40 beads.  Kristina suggests either size 8/0 or 6/0 with fingering weight yarn -- we will include the larger 6/0s as they add more "ooomph" and drama, so to speak.   Your kit will include more than you need.

They might be a contrast beads -- perhaps gold or silver -- or a bead that picks up the yarn color and plays with it.  If you have a preference let me know.  Otherwise I will choose for you.

The Pattern

The instructions for this lovely shawl are both written and charted with lots of photos and directions.

The kit will not automatically include the pattern. I know some knitters prefer to get it directly as a PDF file of the pattern from Kristina via her Ravelry web page. In that case, set the Pattern drop-down menu to "No Pattern Needed."

Alternatively, if you would like a printed copy, please make sure the drop-down menu is set to that. It is 12 pages.

We also can email the pattern to you via email (just be aware that it is not automatic; I have to manually send it to you and generally do that right before shipping your kit.

Just make sure that both drop-down menus are set as you would like before you check out.
