This really sings to me -- especially now that we are in the shortest days of the year.
By Ute Nawratil, Waiting for the Sun is a fairly simple knit, which makes fantastic use of colors and form.
An important note: you must (!) get the pattern from the designer directly on her Ravelry page. We do not carry it directly. What we do have are kits that you can use to knit this masterpiece.
The Design
Here is how Ute describes this lovely piece:
‘Waiting for the Sun’ was created during a seemingly endless string of dark, gray winter days.
It is a semi-circular shawl that starts at the top but changes directions a few times during the knitting process.
For the most part, it’s just garter stitches and slipped stitches, but I won’t recommend the pattern for beginners. On the other hand, if you are not afraid to change directions, you don’t need that much knitting experience.
The Yarn and Colorways
For the original, Ute used fingering yarn, about 120-150 g per color -- or roughly 627 yards - 690 yards. She recommends:
For the best optical effect, you should combine a solid color and a self-striping yarn with (relatively short) gradients. Yarn weight should be fingering or sport, although the pattern can be done with bigger yarn.
This should give you finished measurements of about 170 x 66 cm -- which translates roughly to 67" x 26".
Our kits do not use the same yarn that Ute used in her original piece. You can see what we offer in the inset photos on the right in the top picture and again right below that.
For each of our kits, as the long-color-run yarn we have Amitola, from Louisa Harding. This is a 80% Wool 20% Silk with approximately 195 yards per 50 gram ball, and lovely slow-striping color runs.
Three balls will be included in each kit.
Kit A
This kit will include four balls of Amitola's Technicolor. This is the rich and clear colors of the spectrum -- true primaries and secondaries running from red to orange to yellow to green to blue to indigo to violet. (3 balls per kit)
Our solid-color contrast yarn is from Malabrigo, their Sock yarn of 100% superwash merino and with about 440 yards (402m) per 100g skein. Two skeins will be in each kit.
Kit B will give you a different look with the Amitola colorway called Ballet Rehearsal. This gives you the aquas and peaches and browns of varying tonalities. (3 balls per kit)
Acting as its background colorway, is Dream in Color's Lamb & Goat, a fingering weight yarn of 90% NZ wool + 10% cashmere (feels great!) and each skein with 190 yards/ 50g. The colorway is Spruce, a rich almost-solid dark teal-ish forest green. (3 balls per kit)
This Kit B is a bit more expensive -- the price addition is shown in the drop-down menu.
I recommend looking at the lovely projects here to get a good idea how other colorways work together in this piece.

Just another reminder on the pattern -- get it directly from Ute here. This kit includes the yarns only.
