Nim Teasdale, designer extraordinaire, is creating a series of patterns called the Mythplaced series, based on the work of the amazing Herbert Niebling.
This is the first one, Brécilien.
The Design
Here is what Nim writes:
Brécilien is a textured lace & mesh semicircular shawl, with botanical and architectural elements evocative of other eras & places, thanks to the genius of the wonderful Herbert Niebling. The design begins reminiscent of a woodland daisy, oak leaves then flow into gothic arches, which shift dreamily into a swooping edge.
The shawl is named for the forest of Arthurian legend, also known as Brocéliande, and translates elements from Niebling’s lace into a wearable format.
The pattern is one main size, though extra wedges can be added to make more than a half circle, and the edging can be repeated to soak up a little extra yardage. The depth could also be increased by using a heavier yarn.
The design is charts only the initial few rows, and suits lace to sport weight yarn, of solid or gradient colouring.
The Mythplaced series is some seriously decadent, escapist knitting for those in need of respite from these strange times. An opportunity to lose yourself in lace and daydreams of other times & places for a little while to rest, before reentering the world again for another day…
Yarn and Colorway
We do not offer the same yarn as what Nim used in her original piece. You can see what we have in the inset photo on the top picture on this page and again below that.
Our kits offer lace weight yarn balls from Freia Fibers, each Two-ply 100% US Merino Wool (Mulesing-free), with 712 yards (651m) per 75g.
The colorway we chose is called Salvia and is long color runs gradually changing from mint into lilac into mulberry into wine (or vice versa depending on how the colors are wound on the ball).
One ball will be in each kit.
Beads?
No, Nim did not add beads to her design but wrote to me that they could be easily added for a really special look.
We offer that option via the drop-down menu above.
If you choose to get beads, your kit will include a 25g container of size 8/0 beads or roughly 1,000 beads. These are the smaller more delicate size that work well with lace weight yarn.
(If you would prefer size 6/0 (larger) tell me and I'll do a swap. In that case 25g will give you only about 300 beads.)
Where and when you add beads will be totally up to you and your own design sensibilities.
If you have a thought on what color bead you want, tell me; otherwise I will choose for you.
Pattern
The cost of the pattern has not been factored into this kit.
If you wish to get it via Nim's Ravelry page here, then set the drop-down menu to "No Pattern Needed".
If you wish us to print it for you and mail it with your kit, then set the drop-down menu to "Printed Copy".
Alternatively you can get it via a pdf that will be saved here on EarthFaire's website in your account setting.
