Another marvelous hood-type design by Nim Teasdale, Nottingham is nothing short of gorgeous and perfect for the cooler months ahead of us.
This is the latest in her series based on medieval head gear. Looks here for our kits for her somewhat simpler Sherwood.
The Design
Here is what Nim writes:
Nottingham is a fancy pants hooded cowl (or ultra-mini cloak) inspired by the snazzy folks of the Middle Ages. (Basically, a more elaborate cousin of Sherwood, with more everything.)
Challenge level: Decidedly. Especially rows 11-13. (The rest of it is pretty straight forward, if that helps.) This is the most challenging of the series.
Yarn and Colorways
Our yarns are not the same as what Nim used in her original. You can see our selection in the inset photo on the upper righthand corner of the top picture on this page and again below that.
She writes also "Sizing is adaptable - the depth and length of the hood can be adjusted to your preferred measurements, and the width and length of the cape are also customisable.
"Yardage is also variable due to the sizing, but roughly 500-1000m DK yarn for an adult. (Mine used 560m (700y) for a shoulder circumference of 100cm (40”), working extra rows to use the entirety of both skeins.)"
We chose for our yarn Malabrigo's Dos Tierras, a DK yarn of 50% merino + 50% baby alpaca and with 210 yards/ 100g.
For the main color of the hood, we brought in the colorway Purpuras, a deep rich red-violet.
Nim writes that she used about 430 yards (400m) of the main color for her hood. Two skeins of Dos Tierras is so very close (420 yards) that we are going with that in the kit.
(If you feel you want the safety and adaptability of an extra skein, let me know.)
She also used 180 yards (170m) of her contrast color. We are including a third skein of Dos Tierras in the slightly lighter Hollyhock.
There is an addtional 80 yards (70m) used for the bind-off and for embellishments which Nim says can be the same or a lighter weight. We chose one of Malabrigo's Minis, (84 yards/ 77m) in the colorway Gris, a medium gray. (If one of the other colors of the Minis appeals to you more, just let me know and we will subsitute for you.)
So to summarize: your kit will consist of two Purpuras (420 yards), one Hollyhock (210 yards), and one Gris (84 yards), as described above.
If you would like to make any adjustments, contact me and as long as we have stock I will be happy to accomodate you.
The Pattern
The kit will not automatically include the pattern and the cost of the pattern has not been figured into the cost of the kit. We offer three ways of getting it:
1. I know some knitters prefer to get it directly as a PDF file of the pattern from Nim via her Ravelry web page.
In that case, make sure the drop-down menu is set to "To Be Bought From Designer," as you will not need it sent with your kit. This way you will automatically get any updates to the pattern directly from Nim.
2. Alternatively, if you would like a printed copy, then the "Pattern" drop-down menu should be set to that.
3. We can set up the pattern as a PDF, stored here on our website. That is also an option.
