A gorgeous design by Nim Teasdale, Nucifera is (to quote Nim),

Nucifera is an adaptation of a small doily by the amazing Herbert Niebling, that I’ve modified and expanded into a chart that can be repeated to make a shawl of any size.

It also offers a variation of the original motif that can be substituted at will, or used as an edging variation (as pictured). Both charts can be worked to any size, or until the yarn runs out.

  • The design can be worked entirely from the written pattern, or from charts with notes.

  • The design suits any yardage of lace to sport weight yarn, of solid, semi solid, subtle speckle, or gradient colouring. (Choose needles to suit your yarn & gauge preference.)

The original doily had a number rather than a name, so I have named this version after the Latin word for nut-bearing, as the motif reminds me of cocoa pods, and chocolate happens to be dear to my heart. :)

It is my hope that this reworking will enable more people to enjoy Niebling’s work.

Yarn and Colorways

The yarn we chose for our kits is not the same as what Nim used in her original -- you can see our kits in the inset photos on the top picutre and again below that.

*****

Our yarn is from Freia and is one of their ombre yarns with loooooooong color runs, made of 100% superwash US Shaniko Merino and with 456 yards (416m)/ 100g.

The colorway is called Giza and is a rich blend from deep indigo to gradually turn into red violet and then merlot, lightening into a rose.  (Or vice versa, depending on how the ball is wound).

One skein will give you enough yardage for the smallest size shawl and each kit is set up to give you this one skein.  Nim suggests up to 1000m (about 1094 yards) for the largest size.  So if you want a larger wrap, go for multiple kits.

The pictured shawl by Nim used about 580 yards (530m).

Beads?

No, there are no beads written into this design.  However, there are lots of places beads could look great.  If you would like to add them -- where and how often being your choice --- we offer the option of getting a 25g container sf size 6/0 beads.  That will give you about 300 beads to place where you will.

If you have a preference on bead color, tell me.  Otherwise I will choose for you.

The Pattern

Note also that the kit will not automatically include the pattern and the cost of the pattern has not been figured into the cost of the kit.

I know some knitters prefer to get it directly as a PDF file of the pattern from Nim via her Ravelry web page. In that case, make sure the drop-down menu is set to "To Be Bought From Designer," as you will not need it sent with your kit.

Alternatively, if you would like a printed copy, then the "Pattern" drop-down menu should be set to that.

We can set up the pattern as a PDF, stored here on our website.  That is also an option.

Make sure the drop-down menu is set as you would like before you check out.
