A lovely scarf, playing with short rows and colors, the Tintype 02 Scarf by Wöldten is sure to keep your interest.

The pattern cost has not been factored into this kit; we offer the yarns only.  Get the pattern directly from Ona, the designer, on her Ravelry page here

The Design

Here is what Ona writes:

The Tintype Collection is a new group of designs that continues my work in the field of short-row pattern motifs.

This body of work highlights the way color changing and gradient yarns move throughout a design.

The Tintype Scarf comes in two different versions - 01 and 02. The pattern featured here is for the 02 version, a smaller sister design to the 01 which is much larger.

The design is composed of a series of elongated hexagonal shapes that are intentionally positioned off-center. The location of them from top to bottom is also framed in an asymmetric manner. This style of composition stems from my love of Japanese design aesthetics. The resulting work is both modern and timeless appealing to a broad range of individuals.

Yarn and Colorways

Ona writes, The name for this collection stems from the way the design is knit. Garter stitch rows are used to create the slat styled ‘walls’. The ‘windows’ are short-row shapes made using stockinette stitch and the double stitch turn technique. With the garter stitch rows visually rising up above the areas of stockinette, the short-row shapes appear to visually fall behind the garment or beyond the space of the main body of the work...

The scarf is knit using sport weight yarn, though as a scarf one finds that gauge is not so terribly important.

Our kits do not use the same yarn as Ona's original pieces.  You can see our kits in the upper righthand corner of the top photo on this page (the insets) and again below that.

The main (background) colors of our kits are Laines du Lord's Matera (100% merino), 175 yards/ 50g. As Ona suggests 416yds of the main color, three balls will be included in each kit.

I thought this very interesting about the wool:

This 100% fine wool comes from lovingly raised ‘Gentile di Puglia’ sheep, a breed derived from cross-breeding local ewes with Merino rams first brought from Spain in the fifteenth century. After the Unification of Italy in the nineteenth century, they were cross-bred with French Rambouillet and German Merinolandschaf sheep.

The result was high-quality fine wool with a fiber diameter of 18–22 microns. It has a slightly elastic and dry touch that creates zero pilling, making it ideal for all stitch work.

The "windows" will be knit using Louisa Harding's Amitola, 80% wool + 20% silk, 273 yards (250m) per 50g ball. Ona suggests 136 yards of the "window" yarn so one ball will be in each kit.

Kit #1:

1. Matera in Black (three balls)

2. Amitola in Ember, including slowly changing yarn ranging from apricot through melon into pink and fuchsia and gradually deeper violets. (one ball)

Kit #2:

1. Matera in Bottle (deep green).  (3 balls)

I love how this looks with the dark rich green in particular but be aware that on occasion the Amitola colorway moves into a green so the "windows" will blend a bit here.  I think that as the textures of the yarn differ (slightly shiny with the silk of the Amitola, quite matte with the Matera) that the look will be great.

If you would prefer the Cream for stronger contrast, that is an option -- we offer that as Kit #3.

2. Amitola in Starry Night.  I see royal purple, deep cobalt, rich turquoise, teal, sage, blue, gold, orange, and true green.  (one ball)

Kit #3:

Same as Kit #2 but Cream will be the main colorway instead of Bottle.
