Another beauty from Nim Teasdale, we offer here her After Image.
The Design
Here is what Nim writes:
Afterimage is a shawl with variations, designed to be able to create many different shawls from the one pattern.
It is a hybrid of two classic rippling stitch patterns, Ostrich Plumes, and a variation of Old Shale (similar to Feather and Fan), and the knitter can slip between the alternating and straight forms of the lace as preferred. The unusual construction of the spine creates an intriguing flow of lines at the centre, and the arrowhead edging option adds an airy finish.
Lace is worked only every second right side row. Wrong side rows can be either knit or purled (or both, worked in alternation), to create smoothly flowing lace, or rippling garter waves.
For a totally different look, work the straight pattern in stripes to add drama to the garter lines. (Stripes work well with the straight pattern, but will flatten out somewhat with the offset pattern)
The pattern can be worked entirely from the written pattern, or from charts with some notes.
It uses a top down construction. Each part of the chart is repeatable, and bind off can be worked on any wrong side row, making it adaptable to any yardage.
