I love this!

Alien Emissary is a new pattern by Dorothy Bulac-Eriksen.  Dorothy works as a costume designer in the film industry and her designs tend to reflect a really unique aesthetic.

They are so much fun to knit!

This kit is composed of yarn only.  To get the pattern, go to the designer's Ravelry page and get it from her directly.

The Design

Here is what Dorothy writes:

Alien Emissary is an asymmetrical, curved, triangular shawl and is the sister of the “Bjayzl” shawl, with some inventive design features that take it to new places!

It starts with an alternating I-cord cast on, and ‘feathers’ of spines and webs that make the shawl grow in stacked wedges. The holey webs are created by bind off and cast on stitches. It also employs the use of German Short Rows to create the fan effect.

Select either the shallow or the deeper shawl (of course, the deeper shawl requires more yarn, so consider all your options). As it grows, it can be made as long as you like, and when deciding your bind off, you have two choices!

Asymmetrical shawls always pose the question of how to wear it, but with the addition of pairs of buttons (and all those holes!), a myriad of wearing options and stability are at your disposal.

Yarn and Colorways

Our yarn is not the same as what Dorothy used in her originals.  You can see our kits in the inset photos on the top picture and again below that.

And please note that our kits do not include buttons.

Dorothy writes that one can use any yarn from Fingering to DK. "The two yarns can be the same weight, or you can make the ‘spine’ yarn heavier than the ‘web’ yarn."

The pattern gives directions for two version:

Shallow Shawl (8 wedges): D: 13”/33cm L: 68”/173cm (curved)
Deeper Shawl (10 wedges): D:25”/63cm L: 90”/230cm (curved)

Our kits will give you enough yarn for the shallower version.  For that one, one kits 8 wedges with a finished depth of about 13”/33cm and length of about 68”/173cm (curved).

(If you want to make the Deeper shawl ((10 wedges): D:25”/63cm L: 90”/230cm (curved)), please contact me to set up something special.)

The shallow shawl requires for the Spine Yarn: 300 yds / 274 m and for the Web Yarn: 400 yds / 366 m. (Note as of 9/6: this is a recent correction from Dorothy that the Spine Yarn requires 300 yards instead of the 150 that she originally stated.)
