A really lovely and fun design by Arella Seaton, this Bird Tribe cowl is a perfect summer project.  Small, lightweight, and intriguing, once you are done you have a perfect piece to wear for warmth as the weather cools or to give as a gift.

The Design

Here is what Arella writes:

The Bird Tribe cowl is the first pattern of the mosaic Birds neckwear collection, featuring original bold graphics inspired by Peruvian textiles, created specially for this design.

The cowl is knitted from bottom up in mosaic stockinette stitch, casting on three stitches and increasing at the beginning and end of each right side row. After completing the flap, stitches are cast on for the back of the neck and joined for knitting in the round. T

he Main Colour can be solid, speckled or slightly variegated, as long there is good contrast with the Contrasting Colour.

Yarn and Colorways

Our yarns are not the same as what the designer used for her original.  You can see our kits in the inset photo on the lower left-hand corner of the top picture on this page and again below that.

Kit A:

MC: Amitola from Louisa Harding (80% wool + 20% silk with 273 yards/ 50g ball), a long color-run colorway called Ember.  It seems to be a play on the colors one might see in a dying capfire: I note magenta and fuchsia, coral and burnt umber into deeper brown.

CC: Laines du Nord's Eco Baby yarn of 100% organic wool and giving 191 yards/ 50g. This is a solid White that will contrast beautifully.

Kit B:

MC: Amitola again, this time in Castaway. The colors here include varying tones of teal and rose and some lovely in-between colors like a subtle deep gold.

CC: Eco Baby again, this time in a deep rich Magenta. This is not as strong a contrast though the Magenta is far deeper than the rose sections of Castaway.
