This hat really caught my eye.  Using illusion knitting techniques, there is a partially hidden blackbird hidden within the trees (so to speak)!

The Design

Here is what Baiba writes:

I love bird watching and playing games like hide and seek, especially in nature. It takes patience and mindfulness to notice things around me, often hiding in plain sight. It is amazing how much one can do with a couple simple stitch techniques!

This pattern is about playing whimsically with lines of knit and purl stitches in two colours. With an increase here and a decrease there, the stripes change direction. A purl here, a knit there and all of a sudden you can see the silhouette of a bird in the corner of your eye. But look again and it disappears the very next moment!

This hat is knitted with two highly contrasting fingering or sport weight yarns.

One of the yarns is used for the background, the other for the bird motive. Sometimes the bird stands out better if it is lighter and brighter than the background, but sometimes the darker colour is best for the bird.

Yarn and Colorway

We love the colors that Baiba used in her original hat and have tried to duplicate that look; however the yarns are not the same.  You can see our offerings in the inset photo on the top picture and again below that. 

Our kits consist of one skein each of:

1. Malabrigo Sock ((100% superwash merino with 440 yards (402m)/ 100g) in the bright lime almost-solid called Lettuce. 

2. Malabrigo Sock again in Black, pure and simple.
