This Box Kite Scarf is a most intriguing design by Cornelia Tuttle Hamilton.

She originally created it using two Aran weight Noro yarns -- unfortunately we are unable to duplicate those yarns or colorways.  However we have found two other Aran weight Noro yarns that we think will make for strikingly lovely scarves.  Read on for more data....

Simply put, as described by the designer:  "This is a zigzag pattern with strategic bind-offs to create the openings. You can have the side border or leave it off, as you wish! Enjoy!"

I love how the flow of the pattern seems (to my eye) to create little creatures peeking out of the scarf.

Yarn and Colorways

We chose the new yarn from Noro called Tasogare.  This is made up of 60% wool + 20% Silk + 20% mohair and each "dragon ball" has a generous 410 yards/ 150g.

It is a bit lighter in weight than the yarns that Cornelia originally used but as this is a scarf, the gauge is of secondary importance to the look and the feel and this yarn is really delicious.

Here I quote the Noro folks:

Tasogare is an Aran/Medium weight featuring Noro's signature blend of coriedale/merino, silk, and mohair - such as popular yarns like Silk Garden.

However, the meaning of Tasogare reveals the inspiration - Japanese for "twilight", that time when colors grow dim as light fades - this yarn features undyed dark brown wool which interplays with the dyed fibers in typical Noro multi colors - giving each color a more muted & deep feeling such as one feels at the end of the day when the brightness of the sun fades.

*****

Cornelia's original piece used an almost solid "biscuit" colorway combined with a colorful one with the long color runs that Noro is famous for.  You can see our yarns in the inset photo in the first picture on this page and again below that.

For our kit, we offer one ball each of these:

#6 Taketa: dark and rich, with varying tones of black, umber and gray.

#11 Kainan: various jewel colors; I see pink, violet, blue, green and gold mostly.
