A simple yet intriguing shawl, this beauty by Kourtney Robinson (creator of such lovelies as the Praline, Winter Bloom and the Celestina shawls to name just a few) is a fun knit indeed.
Chudnosvky Pi is named after two mathematician brothers who set the world record for calculating Pi to several billion digits. Based on Elizabeth Zimmerman's Pi Shawl, this one starts as a half-circle but (like Pi) it continues to grow and actually ends up as larger than a circle by the time you finish.
Originally knit in a sport weight yarn or combination of yarns that gave a sport weight, the shawl is knit using large needles (size 10/ 5.5mm for the original) so that the gauge gotten is a drapey 16 stitches/20 rows to 10cm/ 4" in stockinette.
Figure that you need between 430 - 450 yards (393 - 411 m).
It is interesting to look at the Project Pages on Ravelry to get an idea of what different yarns do with this pattern -- I couldn't find one that I didn't like, whether knit in a solid color, a colorway with long color repeats, a shorter repeat variegated yarn, or anything in between.
You can see, in the last photo on this page, that this shawl was entered at the Calgary Stampede’s Western Showcase and won a first place ribbon. :-)
A great opportunity to play with some wonderful yarns and create a lovely piece indeed.
