I absolutely fell in love with this pattern, the Dragon Scales Shawl by Pope Vergara.

And when I realized that I could get almost all of the exact yarns that the designer used in her original, well I was hooked. The only thing was I wanted richer colors -- I had to change the colors to something more jewel-like.

So read on for what we put together here.

The Design

Here is what Pope writes:

“Dragon Scales Stole,” which originates from my “Dragon Scales Sweater” pattern.

Inspired by the dragon’s scales that symbolize what lies beneath their true, sensitive skin, this stole is knitted flat in two identical pieces that are later seamlessly joined using the Kitchener stitch at the center.

It incorporates slipped stitches, cables, beads, and lace stitches, with added variations in materials to enhance the allure of the garment. Additionally, it features tassel finishes that will provide a final touch to your stole.

"Knit each stitch with the conviction of creating something truly unique.” Dare to knit this stole and discover the magic you can create with your own hands!

To facilitate the process, supporting videos are available to guide you step by step through each technique used.

Yarn and Colorways

You can see the kit we have put together on the righthand section of the top photo on this page and again below that.

The original used for Yarn A was the fingering weight yarn from Manos del Uruguay called Alegría (Merino 75%, 25% Nylon), (425 m / 100 g) (445 yd / 3.5 oz) , one skein. The original colorway was Foil, a medium gray.

Our colorway for this kit Lavender, a tonal blend of delicious light lilac tones.

For Yarn B the designer chose, again from Manos del Uruguay their Cabrito, 75% kid mohair, 25% polyamide, (210 m / 25 g) (230 yd / 0.9 oz) / 3 skeins.  She used color: 7367, a blend of varying ecrus and beige.

We chose a new colorway called Dorian, which is predominantly various tones and depths of purples with a bit of blue and gold and brown.

For Yarn C, she used from Isager their silk mohair, 80% kid mohair, 20% silk, (212 m / 25 g) (232 yd / 0.9 oz) / 1 skein in a beige colorway.

Instead we went with Ella Rae's Silky Kid, 74% Super Kid Mohair, 26% Silk, 219 yards/ 50g.  Our colorway is Clematis, a deep royal purple. As all that is needed is 128 m, one ball will work well.

Beads

The original used 1,334 of the delicata 8/0 beads + 128 of size 6/0 beads.  Pope used a transparent blue/gray bead for the 8/0s and a black cube for the larger ones.

She says that these sizes and shapes are necessary for the technique of one bead in four stitches which is used and that the usual round 8/0s are useless.   Delicata beads have larger holes and thinner walls.  We have brought in a few colors we feel would work well.

The larger beads will be either 4mm cubes or 6/0 round beads; if you have a preference, tell me.

I will choose the colors of the beads for you.  Again, if you have a definite preference, please let me know.
