We'd like to quote Bev's description of Drift Away, as follows:
"This cute little shawl is shallow and wide with a beautiful ruffle at the bottom. Worked from the top down with rapid increasing at the edges resulting in a lovely, wide and feminine shawl/shawlette. It has the ability to be whatever you want, depending on your choice of yarn ..."
Instructions are provided both charted and line-by-line.

Needing only about 525 yards of lace weight yarn (or even fingering weight can work beautifully), this is an easy pattern to follow and knit and easy to adjust and change to your own needs or wants. You will have a choice between doing a stocking stitch or garter stitch body and the lovely lace border is easy to memorize.
What could be better?
The needles used in the original shown here were US 6 and 7 (4mm and 4.5mm). However, gauge is not critical and Bev writes that any yarn is suitable for this pattern though the needle size and required yardage would thus vary.
The one shown here was made with Dyefor Yarn Tussah Silk Lace, done in the small size with finished measurements of 62" (160 cm) wide along the top edge, 128" (300 cm) wide along the bottom edge and 16" (41 cm) deep.
If you plan to use the traditional bind off you can probably get away with one 440 yard (400 m) skein but if you'd like to do the picot bind off you will need about 525 yards (480 m).
Pick out a yarn that sings to you!
We have some lovelies on our fingering and lace weight pages -- and more coming daily. The shelves got a bit bare over December but they are filling up with some really stunning yarns -- check back and see what is new!
