Another strikingly lovely design by Nim Teasdale, I fell in love. :-) EarthStar is a pattern that lends itself to all sorts of gorgeous colors and yarns.
I'll quote her here:
Earthstar is a fun striped semicircular shawl overlaid with a cable motif radiating from a central point in a star shape.
The star is made of a series of wedges which gradually shift into a slip stitch (mosaic) zigzag pattern, then into a lace mesh that can be worked in stripes for a unique 2 colour effect.
The cables are integrated into the knitting, rather than being stitched on afterwards. The shawl is worked in stripes, and the cable lines are made by knitting cables in the working colour as you normally would, then on rows of the other colour those stitches that form the cable line are slipped without being knit. So it’s easier than it looks.
Note that the size of the shawl is quite adaptable as both the texture stitch and the lace sections can be worked to any size.
She mentions that the shawl is ideal for solids/semi-solids, a gradient and solid, or a pair of dappled gradients, as she used in her original.
One can use fingering to DK weight yarn in any yardage between approx 700-1000m (990-1100y) or even decide to skip charts 2&3 for a smaller shawl.
