This scarf really sings to me.  I love the way the short-rows combine to create a strikingly lovely swirl of colors. By Marin Melchior of Marinja Knits it is a real beauty.

You must get the pattern from the designer's Ravelry page here.  Our kits are composed of yarn for this beauty. Each kit includes enough yarn for the scarf or for the stole version.

Here is what the designer writes about her Roiling Waters:

Gorgeous pattern with lots of visual movement.

Much more simple than the previous “Butterfly/ Papillion”, due to the more static nature of the pattern.

  • It is still not simple and takes focus.
  • It is not great for knit nights or social knitting… (sadly) … if you like to chat or drink wine…

It is appropriate for most knitting skills levels (you must be good at the knit stitch and willing to learn a couple new techniques).

However, we each know our own skills and attentive abilities. This one requires much attention. If you are not generally adept at that, even if you have been knitting for a long time, this may not be your best choice of work.

That being said, many beginner knitters have been able to make the more complex “Butterfly/ Papillion” - as they were intent on completing it.

The Yarn and Colorways

I really like how the projects that use Uneek Fingering plus a solid color contrast yarn look.  You can see them on Ravelry here.

Uneek Fingering is 100% Exrafine Superwash Merino with 435 yards (400m)/ 100g skein.

These are, of course, not the yarns that Marin used for her original scarves.  You can see our kits in the inset photo on the top picture on this page and again below that.

Kit A (one skein of Uneek Fingering and two of Lamb & Goat) as described below):

Uneek Fingering #3032 is a new colorway.  I see golds and orange, wines and olives, some browns and grays as well and a lot of in-between colors.

Dream in Color's Lamb & Goat, 90% NZ wool + 10% cashmere (yum!) with 180 yards/ 50g.  This colorway is an almost-solid called Amber, a rich and beautiful goldenrod.

Note that this kit is a bit more expensive than Kit B below as it needs two skeins of the high-end Lamb & Goat to give sufficient yardage.  This difference is shown via the drop-down menu.

Kit B (one skein each as described below):

Uneek Fingering #3012: teal, lime, green, turquoise, violet, purple and some in-betweens as well.

Mirasol's Inka, 64% viscose + 36% alpaca (the viscose gives it a lovely iridescent shine) and with 442 yards (405m) per 75g ball.  The colorway is Amethyst, a medium purple that seems to glow.
