Wow.  This one really floats my boat (so to speak)! :-)  This is fourth set of kits we have put together for this fun and beautiful piece.

The Design

Here is what Dorothy says about Star Lord

The Star Lord is knitted lengthwise, with a giving but stable cast on and bind off.

German short rows are used to create contrast color wedges, and a hybrid of the 3-needle bind off is employed to tuck them back into place.

An attractive diagonal folding effect is achieved so that you have contrast color ‘fins’ on both ends.

The scarf can be made longer or shorter, depending on the number of cast-on stitches. Note that when blocked (and you definitely need to block this scarf!), it lengthens and narrows.

Yarn and Colorways

Again from Dorothy:

If you’ve knitted any of my other designs, you’ll know that I like to play with different weights of yarn in the same item. Don’t be scared, live on the wild side, like the Star-Lord! But here are some guidelines:

The MC can be fingering to DK Weight, but your CC needs to be a fingering weight (and in all cases, not heavier than your MC).

Your MC and CC would be attractive in any combo, just make sure you can tell the difference between the two to make it easier when it’s time to create the fins. Alternatively, the maroon scarf shown is one color, but the metallic sheen of the CC versus the matte qualities of the MC helps you determine between the two.

We took our lead from Dorothy but do not use the exact yarn or colorways she did.  You can see our sets on the right-hand side of the top photo and again below that.

Yardage requirements (approx):
Short scarf: MC: 250 yds / 230m
CC: 180 yds / 165 m

Long scarf: MC: 300 yds / 275 m
CC: 210 yds / 195m

We put together two kits. Each will include one skein of the MC and one of the CC.

For each, the Contrast Color (CC) is Mirasol's Inka, 64% viscose + 36% baby alpaca, with 442 yards per 75g ball.  This has the lovely shiny metallic-ish look that contrast so well with the matte of the wool yarn.

The Main Color (MC) varies as described below:

*****

Kit A

MC: From Malabrigo, we have here their Arroyo sport weight yarn, of 100% superwash merino and with 335 yards (306m) per 100g.  The colorway is Flavia, a tonal variegation with sea foam and pale gray and variations in between.

CC: In Inka, this colorway is called Malachite and is a lovely sea turquoise hue.

*****

Kit B:

MC: From Lana Grossa, this yarn is a sport weight, Cool Wool Hand-dyed, a 100% superfine merino with 350 yards (320m) per 100g.  The colorway is called Bombay and is a lovely variegted, with spans of blue-gray intersperse with small multi-colored speckles on a cream background.

CC: In Inka, this colorway is called Iolite and is a rich dark midnight blue with a lovely silvery sheen.

These kits will give you enough yardage to make either the short or the long scarf.
