A wonderful pattern, for adults and children, from the incredible mind of Jane Elliot. Many of you may have seen Jane's designs at Stitches East, under the name of Not Just Plain Jane Knits, and boy oh boy, are they ever not-just-plain!

This is a unique pattern that will keep your interest. Jane writes, "If you are looking for a stylish way to keep warm or merely jazz up a plain dress, this is a really easy project you can whip up in practically no time. Buy quantity of a main color and use up those odds and ends to make the perfect fashion accessory! Make the coordinating toque and watch those compliments roll in!"

The gauge for this project is 5 sts and 7 rows = 1 inch in garter stitch on size 6 (US) needles with worsted-weight yarn. You will also need a double-pointed needle. Jane explains the use of heavier or lighter yarn, larger or smaller needles, or both to change the size of the hat or the scarf. For the toque, figure on a main color of about 220 yards, and contrast colors of about 2 1/2 yds each color for the leaves (between 9 -12 leaves are needed. For the scarf, if you are planning a solid color, figure on 440 yards. For a multicolor scarf, go with the same amount in the main color, and find about 5 yards of a royal (for the grapes), about one skein of 85 yds in a fuzzy yarn for the stems and vines, one skein of rust about 85 yards and contrast colors of 2 1/2 yards each color for the leaves (adult scarf needs about 9 contrast colors, and the child's about 7. You'll be making about 36 to 40 leaves.) You may use more or fewer colors depending on your own preference.

Lovely.
