Yayoi's Embrace is a really lovely scarf/ cowl by MarinJaKnits.

Get the pattern directly from the designer on her Ravelry page here. Our kit is composed simply of two gorgeous yarns, perfect for this piece.

The Design

Here is what Marin writes:

This shawl is named after Japanese artist Yayoi Kasuma. She is the top-selling female artist in the world.

There is a documentary about her called Kusama: Infinity (2018) that tells her story. I found the film both interesting and profoundly sad. While brilliant, she struggled, as many women have, to be taken seriously in the art world. Today she is well recognized, at her artistic beginning in the 1950’s this was not the case. You may enjoy learning about her and her work.

The PIECE ITSELF… there is a polka dotted element to this patterning & a heart section in the center. The wrong side is also interesting.

This is a combination accessory with the warmth of a scarf and the beauty and style of a cowl. It is knit lengthwise with increases in the style of a triangular shawl. A fun twist on an old standard.

Yarns and Colorways

Our yarns are not the same as what Marin used for her original.  You can see our kit in the inset photo on the top picture on this page and again below that.

Both yarns are from Noro: Kompeito is 35% cotton + 35% silk + 30% nylon.  Each dragon ball has 492 yards/ 150g.

The yarn might be worked as anywhere from sport weight to DK weight.  Interestingly, Marin also writes this: The design is meant to be worked in DK (light worsted) weight yarn. It could be worked in different weights. If changing up the yarn, you will need to estimate yardage needed & I would suggest using a needle recommended on the yarn ball band, or one size larger.

#1 Shiro is beautiful rich speckles of color on a cream background.  A true spring flower colorway.

#8 Matsue is sky blue with a bit fewer speckles adding some bright highlights of color to an evening sky.

Your kit will be composed of one ball of each. The yardage is such that you will have well more than you need and can make quite a substantial piece.
